Biografía

I grew up going to public schools in New Bedford, MA. In third grade I was offered the opportunity to attend a magnet program for grades 4-6. When I met my old friends in 7th grade, I realized how much more I had learned. While some of my 3rd grade classmates didn't graduate from high school, I was valedictorian and able to enroll at Yale. I went on to get a Master's and Ph.D. at Boston University.

That elementary school experience taught me the power of education. Every kid deserves a chance to reach their full potential, not just a lucky few. I want to work to help improve our schools as quickly as we can, so that more kids can have the same opportunity as me.

Filosofía política

We have high hopes for our kids. We want them to have the knowledge and skills necessary to be thoughtful citizens, productive workers, and inquisitive learners. We want all kids to have a fair chance to reach their full potential. And then we look at how California schools are doing right now. Less than half of our students graduate prepared for college or career. African American students are three times more likely to get suspended than their White peers. Two out of five kids graduate grade below grade level in reading, and two out of three graduate below grade level in math. Numbers like that can make me feel overwhelmed. How can we reach our goals when they are so far away? I have to take a breath and tell myself: a little bit at a time. The famous South African cleric Desmond Tutu said it well: “Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” For me, the next little bit is to try to serve on the Riverside County Board of Education. As an education data analyst with two young kiddos, I believe I can add a valuable perspective to the current board. Let’s put our little bits of good together and make the impossible happen. - Dominic
