Preguntas y Respuestas

Preguntas de League of Women Voters of California Education Fund (5)

What do you think the State should do to encourage affordable housing for all Californians?
Respuesta de Marggie Castellano:

The cost of living continues to rise in California, creating a shortage of affordable housing that is simply unacceptable. I would fully support providing greater funding for affordable housing and will advocate for ordinances to create desperately needed low-income housing for seniors, families, and the disabled. These skyrocketing rent prices are displacing families and individuals, and we must do everything we can to not let this happen.

According to a "Civility In America” survey, 75% of Americans believe that the U.S. has a major civility problem. If you are elected what will do to address this?
Respuesta de Marggie Castellano:

As a state senator, I will work with stakeholders in our community to launch public education campaigns and hold community events that promote togetherness and creative problem solving, regardless of political views I will also protect every Californian’s freedom of speech, hold those guilty of hate crimes responsible, and invest in education.

Climate changes, and the shifting between very wet weather and drought, worry Californians. What strategies would allow your district to both satisfy its water needs and protect the environment? Please be specific.
Respuesta de Marggie Castellano:

Our climate is changing rapidly due to human activity. Californians need to do everything we can to stop this change from destroying our beautiful state and the industries within it. This action must start in the legislator. As a State Senator, I would push for our state to continue to lead the country by extending the Global Warming Solutions Act to 2050, by creating green collar jobs, and by rejecting any and all fossil fuel infrastructure projects.

What programs or strategies would you suggest to meet the educational needs of young, low-income Californians?
Respuesta de Marggie Castellano:

I believe California should aim to be the number one state in per pupil spending. In recently years, California has consistently ranked in the bottom ten states per pupil funding yet one of the top states for per prisoner spending--this is absolutely unacceptable. In the state legislature, I will work to invest more resources directly into the classroom, allowing schools to hire more teachers and reduce classroom sizes.

Currently there isn't enough money in the state retirement system to pay for all the benefits promised to government workers. What would you do as Senator to address the state’s unfunded pension liability?
Respuesta de Marggie Castellano:

As a state, California needs to be held to its promises. Our state made the clear promise to our public employees to provide a defined pension plan. As a senator I will ensure that our government workers recieve their promised pensions.
