Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • My top priority is to work on reforming the criminal justice system. I favor the no cash bail system to create equality for criminal litigants.
  • As a judge I hope to work on a committee that deals with prison reform. Prisoners are entitled to live in a safe and healthy environment.
  • I would like to create a collegial atmosphere between litigants. This would provide for swifter resolution of cases.

Preguntas y Respuestas

Preguntas de League of Women Voters of California (3)

What kinds of cases did you deal with over your career as a practicing lawyer?
Respuesta de Lilla Julia Szelenyi:

My practice area has primarily been in workers' compensation. I did appear at social security hearings for my workers' compensation clients.

Overall, do you feel the criminal justice system works fairly and effectively in your county?  If not, why not?
Respuesta de Lilla Julia Szelenyi:

Our criminal justice system is in serious need of reform. There is definitely a bias in our court system. People of color end up in the jails more than whites.
Our criminal justice system is supposed to reform but rather it alienates and brands those charged and incarcerated.
We should focus more on education, mental health care, family connections.

Do you think courts do a good job of handling civil cases in your county?  If not, why not?
Respuesta de Lilla Julia Szelenyi:

I think the courts need to speed up the process of civil litigation. It takes too long for cases to process thru the system. This encourages settlements since parties cannot wait for years for a resolution and cannot continue paying attorney fees.

The delays caused by the courts benefits the wealthy. This creates inequality of access to the courts.
