Biografía

I have been a Kern County citizen for over fifty years, and I am proud to call it home. My father was the first Public Defender here, and my mother was a renowned local historian, and they both instilled in me a sense of duty to serve the community. I've done that for over 30 years, both as a teacher of middle and high school at-risk students, and as an LGBTQ advocate. I have always championed underdogs, and spoken up for underserved people. I've voluntered for a multitude of causes, including Relay for Life, and homeless service organizations. I have organized events to reduce bullying in schools, and to fight suicide everywhere.  In 2006, I was honored to be named Kern County's Teacher of the Year, and in 2016, to receive the California Teachers Association Award for Human Rights.

Filosofía política

We are all in this together, whether we like it or not, and we should act like it. Political rhetoric only serves to divide us, and when we stop listening, our communities begin to whither. I prefer to approach government as an opportunity to bring disparate voices to the table, to discuss difference rationally, and to arrive at concensus whenever possible, using our shared values as a guide. Listening is a required skill for successful governnance, and we must choose to hear even those with whom we expect to disagree. We have more in common than we realize. We must rise above kneejerk politics if we wish to thrive as a community.
