Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • Support our teachers so that they can continue to provide innovative, high quality academic programs
  • Address enrollment growth in a way that is inclusive and focuses on the current and future needs of our community
  • Embrace a collaborative, community-based approach to support the educational goals of our children and families to provide 21st century learning to all of our children

Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine Master of Public Health (M.P.H.), Community Health (1998)
Barnard College at Columbia University Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Anthropology (1995)

I was born and raised in Queens, New York City, the daughter of immigrants from Mumbai, India. My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation of the importance of education. I am a proud graduate of the public school system in NYC, having gone to my local elementary and junior high schools, and then attending a public specialized high school (Stuyvesant High School, in Manhattan).

I went on to receive my Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Barnard College in 1995, and my Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 1998. My MPH focused on Community Health and Development, and strongly emphasized the technical skills of program design/development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, irrespective of the content area. Thus, I am committed to making sure that whatever programs I undertake are meeting their objectives, and all program design takes the community’s needs into consideration first and foremost.

I have demonstrated a proven commitment to serving the community however I can. This meant that when I took time off to raise my daughter, I kept my skills sharp by volunteering to run school-wide and community-wide programs. Volunteering has allowed me to gain a diverse array of experiences in a variety of disciplines, while underscoring the need for meticulous organization, clear communication, and a quick turnaround and responsiveness rate.

My previous professional background is varied- I have worked on state-level public health projects (focused on systems-level change), facilitated corporate philanthropy as the grantor/mentor, and also worked on hospital-based public health programs. I also started a national, independently funded media literacy organization, the Action Coalition for Media Education, where I looked at how the media influences the health behavior and decision-making of children. I have also been on both sides of the grant-making process, as both a grantee and a grantor, and understand the special challenges of each group.

Communities have their unique strengths and challenges, and having a background in cultural anthropology, along with a Masters degree focusing on community health, has given me sensibility and sensitivity of keeping the individual, their families, and communities at the forefront of any discussion, which in turn informs how I interact with people and how I can best serve them.

I genuinely love working with people and communities, and I strongly believe that healthy communities are the gateway to better health outcomes, and therefore, a better life. The health, well-being and advancement of our most vulnerable populations is a strong motivator for me to work on behalf of children and their families, therefore creating communities that are supportive and help people thrive. I have always fully supported individuals and organizations that are trying to make a difference in their communities by doing pro bono work using my public health skills in grantwriting, document editing, and program planning and development.
