Biografía

My name is Rahila Passi and for the past 15 months, I have been proud to serve our community as an appointed Belmont-Redwood Shores School District (BRSSD) Trustee. It has been a great honor to serve in a leadership role in a district filled with parents who give generously of their time and money, teachers and staff who truly have the best interest of our children at heart, and alongside four other dedicated Trustees.  My time on the board has motivated me to continue to give back to our school district and community and decide to run for election.  I believe my cumulative experiences as a community resident along with the depth and breadth of my involvement in the school district enable me to serve and represent our community as a School Board Trustee.

I grew up in a small town in Texas.  My parents came to the US to get their Masters and PhD degrees in Education.  My father served his entire career as the Math and Science Coordinator for the school district that I attended schools in.  My mother worked in a nearby school district; her specialty was in leading English as a Second Language services.

I attended Texas A&M University and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Math and Computer Science, which led me to a career of nearly 20 years in telecom and high tech companies.  My career, and a job opportunity at PayPal, led my husband and I to move to the Bay Area.

We chose a home in Redwood Shores 12 years ago and have enjoyed raising our 2 sons in this vibrant community.  One of my favorite parts of the day is walking my younger son to Sandpiper School in the mornings.  My older son (who is much more independent) attends Ralston Middle School and primarily commutes via the SAMTRANS public bus.

For the past few years, I have been fortunate to take a career pause to raise my children.  Initially, I increased my volunteering in my children’s classroom.  Like so many parents in the Belmont-Redwood Shores community, I sought additional ways to get involved. I stepped forward to lead the school’s Art in Action program as well as getting involved with fundraising and business outreach for SchoolForce, our school district’s outstanding education foundation.  Getting involved at the district wide level enabled me to learn what amazing things were happening across the district and help spread them throughout the district.

For example, while working on the SchoolForce Annual Fundraiser, I learned about the Discovery Day programs at Central, Redwood Shores Elementary and Nesbit schools.  Upon visiting some of the programs that year, I launched the Discovery Day program at my son’s school, Sandpiper and continued to chair it for 3 years.

I have also served on the BRSSD Budget Advisory Committee, the BRSSD Construction Task Force for the expansion of Sandpiper and Cipriani schools, the BRSSD Fundraising Task Force, the BRSSD PTA Council, as Sandpiper School PTA President for 2 years.  I’ve also worked to pass the Measure R (2013) renewal parcel tax, Measure I (2014) facilities bond, and Measure K (2018) parcel tax.

This deep and wide involvement in our District led me to want to serve as a Trustee of the Belmont-Redwood Shores School Board.  I am proud to have been selected last April to fill a vacant position on the board and have enjoyed being able to continue to impact the excellent public school system our community enjoys and benefits from.

Since being selected, I have focused on fiscal sustainability issues our school district has faced which is why I became heavily involved with the committee working to pass Measure K this past June. I also prioritize maintaining and surpassing the academic excellence we are already known for.  Finally, I believe our school district is strong at outreach to, and inclusion of our stakeholders; however we can be even better at it.  I’m proud of all our school district has accomplished and hope to continue serving on the board.
