Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • Bring maximum class size down to where other local districts are. Oakland has a maximum of 32, I am sure we can do as well for our young scholars.
  • Direct action on the districts biggest equity issue, tracking. As an AP teacher, I understand a certain level of prerequisite work. Tracking for 9th grade science into chemistry or Conceptual Physics creates segregation that is harmful to boys and
  • Make our district more sustainable by bringing solar systems on our parking lots and increasing recycling and composting at school sites.

I have surveyed parents, and every single one, of the over 30 I asked, wanted their child to have conferences ( IEP, 504 plans, etc. ) after school time.  Last year, I suggested that we teachers should not be taking students out of classes they are struggling in, in order to help them.  This move only puts them further behind.  In the emails I received a lot of push back by teachers saying they did not want to work after school.  

A solution for this is to have SPED teachers work staggered hours.  2 days per week they would start at 9:30 am and work later so conferences would not have to force students to miss class.

Earlier this week I called all of the districts in Alameda County to check on their maximum class sizes.  AUSD with 35, has the second highest Maximum that I could find.  Albany 28, Berkeley 30, Castro Valley 33, Dublin 36, Emery 32, Hayward 34, Livermore ( Granada HS ) 32.  While a few districts did not pick up the phone, I was able to speak at length with a counselor from Peidmont School District.  He would not give a number but they do not have classes of 35.

This issue is the base of education.  As the number of students in a class climbs past 25, and 30 and into the 30's, the number of frustrated students goes up; the number of missed assignments, number of suspensions, etc. go up.

I am very sad to find this problem in our district but, I will work hard to reduce the overcrowding in Alameda Unified School District.  I still receive emails from my job in Oakland and I see that Oakland teachers, as they did for the 25 years I worked there, put CLASS SIZE at the top of thier barganing list.  I was distraught to find that the teachers union in Alameda found MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE to be less important.  When I emailed my fellow teachers, and spoke to admin about the problem, I heard that 1) it does not effect that many students and 2) it costs too much to correct.  The 2 arguments actually work against each other.  If there are only a few classes being packed in like sardines, then moving our Maximum Class Size down to where others are should not be a problem.

 Last year, teaching Science at Encinal, I taught in a room that was designed for 20 something students.  My students would fill the 28 seats 7 rows of 4 writers desks) on the floor, and then begin filling in the lab stations until all 35 entered the class.  I know that other classes were also overcrowded.  This is completely unfair to our students.
