Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • Education is one of my top priorities. We have to invest in our schools so that the future generation of Sacramentans will represent the value this region places on education. Before and after school protgrams that are inclusive to diversity.
  • Housing is another one of my top priortites. We need to invest in housing that is affordable for the most destititute of us. The city has continued to ignore the vice poverty has place on its constituents. We need adequate affordable housiing.
  • Community investment. Long term local jobs, healthcare facilites, and investment in community development. Nearly every neighborhood in my district had been ignored for downtown development. Its time to invest in the constituents.

Biografía

I am seeking office for Sacramento City Council, District Five. I have lifelong goals to further disability studies programming and to influence positive educational outcomes for socioeconomically underrepresented children and young adults. Through this work I aim to better the overall quality of life for persons with disabilities and those experiencing extreme poverty. I have been a resident of South Sacramento within, or bordering District Five since 1989, and have strong ties to the community.

I am the president of Disability Organizing Group For Initiating Total Equality. This group’s purpose is to advocate at the local and state levels to implement systemic changes that positively affect the lives of persons with disabilities. I served on the California Governor’s Disability Advisory Committee from 2010-2013. I am an active legislative advocate for Californians for SSI, a statewide coalition purposed to influence the restoral of recession era cuts to the state’s portion of SSI grant amounts.

I hold degrees in Music (AA, 2001), Intercultural Communications (BA, 2010), and Disability Studies (MA, 2013). I graduated from the Sacramento Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute in 2015. I have won several awards for advocacy work. I have been a small business owner since 1999. I hold the position of Senior Research Intern for UC Davis’ California Civic Engagement Project where I am leading research on California’s ballot measure process and the funding of such. I am a doctoral student at California State University, Sacramento in the field of educational leadership. I am working to design and inspire the implementation of post-secondary disability studies programming at Sacramento City College. I plan to use this work as a template for such programming within California’s newly planned statewide online community college and beyond.

Filosofía política

Currently I am a doctoral student at Sacramento State University. I am pursuing my EdD in Education Policy and Leadership. I was raised to value education very deeply. My grandmother was born from immigrants of Guatemala and English Jamaica. She taught me that the United States offers an education that is a privilege, and an opportunity that many people are not given access to. Obviously, I have a physical disability that causes my bones to break and deform, I’ve had 13 major surgeries on my hips and my legs between the ages of three and nine years. I bring this up here because the importance of education and intellect has been emphasized in my life and my ambition has always been challenged by disability.

My most adhered to values are based on hard work and dedication. I believe strongly in perseverance and pushing forward. I don’t believe in forcing others to engage in ambitious activities, however I do believe that every person should have the same opportunity to engage in ambitious activities if they so choose. I don’t think most people where I live care about a sad story. How one responds to those adversities is what we care about, or what speaks to character and is valued. At some point all of us are knocked down, how we respond to those challenges are what speaks to character and is held in distinction to the voters in this district. I am convicted by logic and ethics. I specifically have been engaged lately in John Hospers’theory of Rule – utilitarianism as recorded by Pojman and Tramel
