Biography

Born and raised in San Francisco by a single mother, Laura saw her mother struggle to make ends meet, even collecting AFDC for a few years.  But her mom persevered and went back to school at City College of San Francisco to earn her RN. Laura knew from her mother's experiences that education was the key to a better life, and so she excelled in her studies and graduated 20th in her high school class.  After working part time to support herself and changing her major a few times, Laura eventually graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Liberal Studies. She moved to Santa Rosa full time to look after her beloved grandmother while she earned a teaching credential from Sonoma State University.

Laura went on to become a teacher, and has worked in the same district for 25 years. She adopted two little girls who were students at her school, and guided them to adulthood.

Passionate about social justice, Laura has loaned her voice to many causes, but her focus always comes back to public education. Equity for all children has been, and remains, her goal.

Today, Laura wants to continue to serve as a voice for all of Santa Rosa's children. A voice that matters. A voice that cares. A passionate and unafraid voice that echoes the community's concerns.
