Biography

Esther Lemus, a mother, Deputy District Attorney, Berkeley and UCLA Law graduate, and current Windsor School Board member was appointed to serve the students and residents of Windsor in February 2015.  Esther is ready to continue with her commitment to provide all students with the best education possible to help set them up for life-long success.

The youngest of five daughters, Esther was born and raised in Santa Rosa and moved to Windsor with her parents when she was in high school.  After high school, Esther left Windsor to attend college at UC Berkeley following in the footsteps of her older sister.  After graduation, Esther enrolled at UCLA School of Law, becoming the first member of her family to attend and graduate from law school.  As a first generation college and law school graduate, Esther recognizes that a quality education can serve to transform the lives of students and their families.  Because of this, Esther is committed to enhancing the quality of education in Windsor schools so that all students can make their dreams a reality.

As a mother and parent to two young daughters who are students in the district, Esther understands the hopes and dreams that many parents share for their children.  Esther is committed to providing the best, highest quality, and well-rounded educational experience for all students.  Additionally, as a Deputy District Attorney who works daily to provide for the safety of Sonoma County’s residents, Esther also brings her background with public safety to ensure that the safety of Windsor’s students, staff, and administrators remains a top priority.

As a School Board Member, Esther has worked tirelessly, diligently, and passionately to accomplish the following to increase student performance and to provide students with opportunities for their long-term success.  Some of Esther’s many accomplishments as a Windsor School Board member are the following:

• Increased test scores for English Learners

• Maintained strong high school graduation rates

• Saved Windsor property owners more than $1 million over the life of voter-approved school bonds by a  successful refinance of a portion of those bonds

• Overseen efforts to construct new school facilities at Brooks Elementary School and Windsor Oaks Academy, including new classrooms and ongoing construction of a parent drop off at Brooks Elementary

• Taken preventative steps to ensure safety of drinking water for Windsor students following reports of higher than acceptable levels of lead in drinking water in Sonoma County

• Increased number of students reclassified from English Language Learner to English proficient

• Oversight of implementation of Big Picture Learning Program, a program approved for at-risk students which provides individualized learning plan for long term success

• Worked in collaboration with Town of Windsor officials to allow for public access easement through WUSD property to allow for bicycle and pedestrian pathway near the Windsor High School stadium
